TIME FOR CAMP!!!! (Yikes)

Going away from home for the first time can be scary! Here are some tips for kids and parents when new things and new experiences are on the way......

Make a List of Fears.

By writing down the things that make you afraid, it is easier to think about them. Kids and parents can each make their own list. Everyone feels afraid sometimes, so try to figure out exactly what
freaks you out!

Don't Be Ashamed
.

Kids
: Fear is a normal feeling! It is nothing to be embarrassed about.
Parents: Be careful of using phrases such as “Big kids don’t get afraid.”
First of all, this just isn’t true! Secondly, this only shames a child into thinking fear is something to be embarrassed about...when it isn't!
Try saying things like,
“When I was your age, I was afraid of monsters too!”

Take Away the Mystery
.
Parents: Keep your children aware of upcoming changes in advance. Take some time with your child to read a book about what it is they fear. Visiting the website for a child’s new doctor will allow your child to see exactly where they are going and who they will meet.

Questions are Totally Okay!
Curiosity is a normal feeling.
KIDS: asking questions is ALWAYS okay.
PARENTS: answering questions in honest, short and simple responses is the best policy!

To learn more about being afraid, read the new Emotes book "Jumpi Goes To Camp."

Feel free to post any questions or comments on being afraid and what to do with that pesky feeling of fear.
